HOME BUILT: 1928 Archer Daniels Midland Grain Silos, Layhart Elevator, Cereal Grading Company Elevator L. converted to residential housing condominiums in 1983

After Orfield Design

The unusual design of the building is the result of reworking original 1928 built grain towers into 12 floors of residential Condominiums in 1983. Quality concrete building with architectural interest at every turn, distinguished by gracefully curved and exposed concrete walls. Living units with balconies have expansive views overlooking Lake Calhoun and the downtown skyline. The owners of this particular unit did not like the outdated master bath and general bath. They wanted to freshen the spaces, as well as create usable storage although this was somewhat controlled by the existing buildings curving concrete walls, floors and ceilings.

The extent of the remodel was restricted by the Condo management’s rules which prohibited us from moving any toilets, tubs, or showers from their existing locations. We could however change the sink plumbing. Besides the obvious bland and dated look, the master bathrooms’ top complaints were the single sink, one small mirror, a carpeted floor, a shallow tub, and little light. After gutting the space we installed all new plumbing fixtures, tile flooring, tile tub surround with decorative Calcutta marble borders and also used this marble tile border as the new vanity splash. The new vanity area has 2 sinks, painted European style cabinetry featuring flat panel doors with extra wide stiles and rails/slab drawer fronts, Calcutta Gold Marble countertops, pivoting mirrors and side sconces - all brightening this interior master bathroom.

These clients said our “quality of work was great” and marked us as “outstanding” in everything on our Customer Satisfaction Survey indicating that we were picked over the competition because of our “one stop shopping and good service”. They wrote: “It was great to know you and to work with you. We do like the cabinets very much. We like the bathrooms a lot. Great job! We appreciate the work and professionalism. Thank you much!”
