HOME BUILT: 1928 Archer Daniels Midland Grain Silos, Layhart Elevator, Cereal Grading Company Elevator L. converted to residential housing condominiums in 1983

After Orfield Design

The unusual design of the building is the result of reworking original 1928 built grain towers into 12 floors of residential Condominiums in 1983. Quality concrete building with architectural interest at every turn, distinguished by gracefully curved and exposed concrete walls. Living units with balconies have expansive views overlooking Lake Calhoun and the downtown skyline. The owners of this particular unit did not like the outdated master bath and general bath. They wanted to freshen the spaces, as well as create usable storage although this was somewhat controlled by the existing buildings curving concrete walls, floors and ceilings.

Our client had absolutely no storage in the space that was meant for a master closet. Boxes and plastic totes just would not do any longer. One side of the closet now has an area for hanging clothes. Hooks on the supports of the new pole were added for purses/hats/ties, etc. These supports had to be shaped and adjusted on-site to fit the unique concrete curved walls. A bench was also added under the pole and shelf. On the other side, the closet has open adjustable shelves at the area closest to the curved wall to maintain accessibility. Next to the shelves are 3 large doors with more adjustable shelving behind for folding clothes storage and shoes. Flat panel doors with extra wide stiles and rails were used to match the adjacent master bath remodel we performed as part of this project.

These clients said our “quality of work was great” and marked us as “outstanding” in everything on our Customer Satisfaction Survey indicating that we were picked over the competition because of our “one stop shopping and good service”. They wrote: “It was great to know you and to work with you. We do like the cabinets very much. We like the bathrooms a lot. Great job! We appreciate the work and professionalism. Thank you much!”
