After Orfield Design

The old kitchen lacked lighting, counter and storage space, room for a dining room, & general efficiency.  The living room did not have a good relationship with the kitchen. Some drastic changes had to be made!

The first big impact was the custom countertop height rolling table designed specifically for this home.  When in the middle of the room it creates an additional “island” work space OR an eating table for up to six people.  While entertaining, the island can be pushed against the side wall to help traffic flow so people can gather in the kitchen without feeling crowded.

The next dramatic improvement was to open up the existing stairwell walls between the living room and kitchen with new railings. This let borrowed natural light into each room and integrated the formerly independent spaces.

The small old side window was removed completely and siding patched. This allowed room for the new refrigerator, countertops, & storage. A new 2-wide window was installed over the sink facing the attractive backyard. Other changes in this remodel included replacing the old vinyl flooring to oak hardwood to coordinate with the rest of the house, new recessed and under-cabinet lighting, & all new appliances. The new porcelain tile “wood” backsplash protects the wall while cooking and creates a soft color transition between the “weathered wood” Formica 180FX counters and new bright white cabinetry.

As a “foodie” this owner went from shy to enthusiastic about cooking for family & friends!
