This client purchased a duplex in all of its original and outdated glory and wanted to remodel it to incorporate his modern design ideas and European taste. Our challenge was to fulfill his desires within the guidelines of residential building code, the confines of the dated balloon-framed structure and original trim aesthetics. The kitchen and breakfast area were altered to incorporate a new rear hallway and new guest powder room, and flooring was replaced and refinished in the front and rear stairwells and throughout the rest of the unit.
The existing general bath was remodeled to display porcelain tile soldier-stacked on the bathroom wainscot and tub walls, complimenting the penny round green floor tile. Skill in rough framing was required to flush out the tile at the linen wall, wainscot, tub walls and tub front. A fire-chase next to the existing chimney was capped and converted into a handmade linen cabinet for attractive bathroom storage. This interior is tied together by stunning color and extensive architectural detailing, European fixtures, and selective material use – which created dynamic focal points throughout the various rooms.
